The joins are where these trips go wrong
Any park pairs with any beach if you fly. The useful question is which pairings avoid losing a day to it.
The four pairings that work
| Route | How it connects | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Masai Mara + Diani | Fly Mara → Nairobi → Diani, same day | The standard. Works, and worth the flights. |
| Tsavo + Diani | Road or SGR train from Nairobi through Tsavo to the coast | The shortcut. No internal flights at all if you want. |
| Amboseli + Diani | Fly via Nairobi, occasionally via Mombasa | Good. Amboseli needs only two nights, which suits a short trip. |
| Samburu or Laikipia + coast | Two flights via Nairobi | Fine with fourteen nights. Cramped with ten. |
The train, which is genuinely worth considering
The SGR runs between Nairobi and Mombasa and passes through Tsavo, stopping at Voi and Mtito Andei — both near park gates.
That makes a three-part trip possible with no internal flights: Nairobi, then Tsavo for two or three nights, then on to the coast. It costs a fraction of flying, takes a few hours rather than the whole day a road transfer would, and shows you the country between.
The catch: Tsavo is lower-density game viewing than the Mara. You are trading animals per hour for space, cost and a different kind of day. For some people that is the better trip.
Connection rules we do not break
- Never the last domestic flight of the day onto an international connection. If it slips there is no later option.
- Allow properly for Wilson to Jomo Kenyatta. It is a cross-city transfer in Nairobi traffic, not a taxi hop.
- Build in a Nairobi night on arrival. Connecting straight from long-haul to a light aircraft costs you your first game drive.
- Check baggage limits on every leg. Light aircraft limits are strict and soft bags only.
- Put the safari before the beach. For all the reasons on the ordering page.
